The Altmark, the northernmost region of Saxony-Anhalt, is characterized by vast lowlands, sandy, rolling hills, and thick forests. Numerous drainage ditches and expansive meadows dominate the low Elbe River floodplains of the Altmärkische Wische area. The region is dotted with elongated villages and scattered farmsteads, some of them built on man-made hills (dwelling mounds). The Arendsee Lake, with its area of 554 hectares, is the largest natural lake of Saxony-Anhalt. The Elb-Havel-Winkel area boasts plenty of pristine charm: innumerable stagnant streams, ditches, pools and some remaining marsh forest prevail. In the heart of the Altmark, the Zichtauer Berge, with their mountainsides covered chiefly with pine growth, contrast starkly with the otherwise flat scenery. The Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide heath region is located south of the Altmark. It is considered one of the least populated and thus least fragmented natural spaces in Germany. Towards the edge of the vast gorse heathland lie elevated pine forests, centuries-old oak forests, and a lime-tree forest of almost 200 hectares. West of the heath is the Drömling area of flat lowlands comprising a now-drained marshland. The pristine landscape is shaped by traditional agricultural use, a scenery interspersed with ditches, fields, meadows and innumerable tree lines and hedges. In the south, the Drömling meets the Flechtinger heights and the Calvörder hills, densely wooded hills rising up to an elevation of 162 meters. The regions main cities are Salzwedel, Stendal and Tangermünde.
